the green challenge
The Green Workplace Challenge encourages organizations to reduce the environmental impacts of their operations and buildings by engaging property owners, managers, and office tenants.

This Challenge has two options depending on the organization’s relationship to its workplace. For property owners or managers, both of these challenges can be completed. If you are an office tenant please only complete the office tenant challenge:

1. Property owners and managers Benchmark the building’s energy use, water consumption, and waste, and to reduce those levels throughout the year. To take the Property owner and manager program, click here and an email will automatically be sent to you to register for this challenge. link to property

2. Office tenants Change your workplace behaviors, policies, and facilities to increase awareness of environmental issues, reduce energy use, water consumption and waste, and lower the greenhouse gas emissions from workplace-related transportation by proceeding with the challenge below.

Who should complete the Green scorecard?

We recommend a primary point of contact/administrator register your organization as a new participant, and then the following employee positions can be added as additional users to help fill out each scorecard. These additional users may be identified during the registration process.

If you are smaller businesses with shared job responsibilities, one individual may complete all scorecards. For larger businesses, we recommend that a staff member in Operations, Facilities Management, Environmental Affairs, or similar department be responsible for completing the Green Scorecard.

The Green Workplace Challenge Toolkit is a central resource for learning more about how to implement the ideas listed in the scorecard.

The Green Workplace Challenge scorecard is intended to be used to assess your organization’s environmental practices as well as a resource for gathering new ideas. Once registered, participating organizations may access and update their scorecards at any time, with the goal of increasing their scores throughout the challenge year. Scores will be reviewed periodically, and participants will receive awards throughout the year as they reach higher levels of recognition.

The Green Workplace Scorecard has questions which are specific ideas for greening a workplace, including questions that are left open for innovative practices. The scorecard is divided into four categories:

  • Employee Involvement & Community Outreach
  • Energy & Water
  • Waste & Consumption
  • Transportation
Although participants are encouraged to achieve as many points as possible, they are not expected to achieve all points. As noted below, an organization that receives 15 points has taken many important steps toward being an environmentally conscious workplace and is deserving of recognition. The Green Workplace Challenge has four award levels for Local Environmental Hero, which are tied to the following point totals:
