the green challenge
back button
The Green Workplace Challenge encourages organizations to reduce the environmental impacts of their operations and buildings by engaging property owners, managers, and office tenants.

Property owners and managers will receive recognition for improvements in their building’s performance over the course of the challenge year. The challenge encourages property managers to benchmark their energy use, water consumption, and waste, and then work to reduce those numbers over the course of the challenge year. Property owners/managers also will receive recognition for engaging tenants in the Green Workplace Challenge.

Award levels are based on achievement in reaching either a base or a stretch goal in each category. Energy and water consumption will be tracked using the free ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager benchmarking tool. Achievements will be determined at the end of the challenge year once participants have submitted an ENERGY STAR report, waste report, and tenant engagement questionnaire to the Mayor’s Office.

scoring details
After registering for the challenge, participants will receive an email describing the process for creating a Portfolio Manager account linked to this program. Participants will enter data from the past 12 months to use as a baseline against which to measure improvement. They will then securely share it with the Mayor’s Office. Participants are not required to apply for the Energy Star certification nor provide the professional assessment required for Energy Star certification.

Waste reduction is measured by a decrease in the volume of trash. Most waste management companies can produce a detailed waste report measuring the number of collections and the volume of trash collected. If a waste management company does not provide a report including the volume of trash collected over a 12 month period, participants may use the waste form provided by the Mayor’s Office of Environment and Sustainability. Recycled materials are not included in the waste measurement.

Tenant engagement will be measured by tenant participation in the Green Workplace Challenge and calculated by either the % of employees or % of occupied square feet.
